Euro elections in 2014

Hustings, Sunday June 2nd 12.30-4.30pm
Labour South East now has a shortlist of 10 regional candidates for the 2014 European Parliamentary elections. Over the next couple of months, all SE members will be able to vote to decide the order in which candidates appear on the Labour Party list. In the Euro elections, people will vote for a party – and then if Labour gets two places out of the ten for the region, our top two candidates will be elected. Members are invited to come and meet the candidates at Owen House on June 2nd.

Ballot papers will be arriving by mid-June, for return by the end of July. The Election Commission will publish the results in August.

South East Dinner with Ed

Ed Miliband joined us at the Labour South East Dinner at the Hilton Hotel, Victoria on March 14th. He was accompanied by Caroline Flint MP, who launched our Surrey Living Wage Campaign in Woking in February.

Ed spoke convincingly about One Nation Britain and what we need to do now. Other regional reps, and Caroline as the SE Elections Champion, also spoke, and brought us up to date in advance of the elections. Our group of ten from Woking had a rousing good time with plenty of hilarious debate. The winner of the SE Auction, Abdul Majid Tramboo, barrister and friend of our CLP Ethnic Minority Officer Sabir Hussain, generously gave his prize to Woking CLP. So members who would like a FREE one-week holiday next May, in a large and pretty Dordogne farmhouse with a pool, should read the leaflet on our website. There is accommodation for four separate couples.

PLEASE NOTE: You must give your name and contact details to our Acting Secretary Tom Crisp, on 07971 805884 or tomcrisp@hotmail.com, before June 18th, to put in the hat for our Free Holiday Draw at the Open Forum on June 19th – see Dates for your Diary for details.

Update on the Election Petition

We have now challenged the electoral registrations of a number of voters in Maybury & Sheerwater. These objections were considered by Woking Borough Council on April 8th and the Electoral Registration Officer has removed 146 names from the register.

Meanwhile, at Guildford Magistrates Court, the Crown Prosecution Service was granted a twelve-month extension to the deadline for starting an action for electoral fraud.

Commissioner Richard Mawrey is now arranging for the Election Trial to be held between July 8th and 11th, either in the Woking Council Chamber or at the H.G.Wells Conference Centre. Between now and then a considerable amount of work still has to be done in obtaining final evidence and statements from those on our schedule through interviews by the police and agents acting under the direction of the legal team.

Stop press…stop press… GOOD NEWS

Janice Worgan, our Secretary, was discharged from the Woking Hospital at 1pm on Thursday May 9th. She walked eight steps unaided on Tuesday 6th so it sounds like progress has moved rapidly recently. We now wish her a 100% recovery and hope to see her soon!
