Surrey has managed to grit the major roads, but many areas are now beginning to see their footpaths freezing over with dangerous packed ice.
As the forecasters are saying that the current cold snap will last for some weeks, it would have been prudent to grit them. Instead, the County Council has run out of grit, and started replacing it with sand. One snowfall, and they’re all out.
One has to question how effective this will actually be; and further questions remain over whether paths will be gritted at all.
Mercifully, grit has gone down in Woking town centre, but even paths such as the one I walk, close by the centre, remain unsafe.
The Conservatives will even leave you to fend for yourself when it is something as simple as clearing their own footpaths.
